cured,  as of now. Diabetes has multiple causes and multiple effects.   Mainly there are two types of diabetes. Type 1 and 2.  Type 1 is autoimmune , occuring in younger age group. There is destruction of beta cells of pancreas which produce insulin. This type of disease is to be supplemented with insulin as there is decrease in production.   Type 2 has decreased production and or with insulin resistance. Insulin helps cells take up glucose , optimising its utilisation.Resistance to insulin causes the sugar to stay back in blood there by causing increased blood sugar levels. Supplementing insulin and decreasing insulin resistance is the  treatment. Now the disease being multifactorial , destruction of beta cells being irreversible and insulin resistance sparingly understood. The treatment is struck at containing the disease.   Diabetes being the mother of many other diseases, has attracted lot of attention. The research in definitive cure have met with relative success only. Pancreatic transplantation in type 1 has been tried. Stem cell transplantation which the most promising of all is theoretically feasible but in practice has met with many roadblocks.  Diet and exercise are as  important as the medicines prescribed.Many neglect them as it requires disciplining of the will.
